Express Vehicle Contracts have learned that Britain's 'White Van Men' are Making the switch to Eco-Friendly Electric Vehicles!
Across the UK, "white van men" are increasingly transitioning to zero-emission vehicles, driven by their commitment to environmental sustainability and cost-saving benefits.
Environmental Awareness and Cost Efficiency Leading the Charge
New research indicates that the primary motivator for van drivers switching from petrol and diesel to electric vehicles is a heightened environmental consciousness. Other significant reasons include the pleasure of driving an electric vehicle (63%), lower energy costs (60%), and attractive customer offers (43%).
Interestingly, car drivers who choose electric or hybrid options are less influenced by environmental concerns (55%) compared to van drivers.
A Greener Lifestyle Beyond the Wheel
Data from Peugeot reveals that van drivers are not only eco-conscious behind the wheel but also in their personal lives. More than a third of van drivers prefer cycling over car drivers (12%), and 76% opt for walking, surpassing the 64% of car drivers who do the same.
Eurig Druce, managing director of Peugeot UK, stated, “Our research shows that van drivers are among the most environmentally aware members of society. Whether it's eco-friendly driving habits, reducing single-use plastics, or choosing an all-electric van, sustainability is at the forefront of their decisions. Peugeot offers the most extensive electric vehicle lineup among mainstream European manufacturers, including electric versions of every van model, helping more van drivers meet their sustainability goals.”
Eco-Friendly Choices Extend Beyond Driving
Research also highlights that van drivers make environmentally friendly choices in other areas of their lives, such as using reusable coffee cups, metal straws, and alternatives to aluminum foil more frequently than car owners.
Most van drivers cite potential cost savings on fuel and other running expenses as a major factor in their decision to switch to electric vehicles.
Current Market Trends and Concerns
Despite these positive trends, data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) shows that battery electric van registrations fell for the third consecutive month this year, with a 30.3% decrease in August compared to the previous year. Electric vans still hold a 5.5% market share.
SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes expressed concern, stating, "There is an urgent need to boost operator confidence by providing long-term stability for the Plug-in Van Grant, maintaining fiscal incentives, and speeding up the rollout of van-suitable charging infrastructure. Without these measures, the UK's ability to achieve its net zero targets while fostering economic growth will be compromised."
