BYD is poised to explore European interest in its high-end rival to the Land Rover Defender at the Geneva motor show.

The Chinese automotive giant introduced the U8 4x4 last year as a flagship for its premium Yangwang brand, potentially competing against luxury automakers such as Audi, Mercedes-Benz, and BMW.

Previously silent on bringing the Yangwang brand to Europe, BYD has now confirmed plans to "test public response" to the U8 at Geneva, marking the brand's debut on the continent.

This year, BYD stands out as one of the few major automotive brands participating in the show.

BYD's CEO, Wang Chuanfu, has ambitiously aimed to "transform the global luxury car landscape" with Yangwang, indicating a vision beyond the domestic market.

The Geneva motor show will serve as the European premiere for the Yangwang line, highlighting the exceptional prowess of their new e4 platform, exclusive to the U8 and distinct from the five electric models BYD currently offers in Europe.

A key feature of the U8 is its potent quad-motor powertrain, delivering over 1100bhp and enabling intricate maneuvers such as 360-degree 'tank turns'. This system enhances the vehicle's stability and agility.

The powertrain configuration mirrors the upcoming electric Mercedes EQG, also featuring a similar quad-motor setup.

Innovation extends to the U8's power supply, primarily driven by a 49kWh battery and supplemented by a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine serving as a range extender—this engine powers the vehicle without direct mechanical connection to the wheels.

The U8 boasts an advanced hydraulic suspension system designed to reduce rollover risks and maintain cabin stability during abrupt movements, offering the novelty of three-wheel driving in case of a puncture.

At 5300mm in length with a 3500mm wheelbase, the U8 stands to challenge flagship models like the Land Rover Defender and Mercedes G-Class in Europe, assuming it gets exported.

Specifics regarding targeted markets, volumes, or local pricing remain under wraps. In its native market, the U8 is priced at around £120,000.

Additionally, BYD will unveil the Denza D7 in Geneva—a luxury electric crossover set to contend with the Audi Q8 E-tron, born from a partnership with Mercedes-Benz. Plans for the Denza D9, a luxurious MPV, include a European launch this year.

These launches alongside the BYD Seal U, an upcoming plug-in hybrid crossover for the UK, underscore BYD's strategic expansion in Europe's electric vehicle market.
