Volkswagen California T7: PHEV Campervan Confirmed for 2024

Introducing the Next-Generation Volkswagen California Camper: Now with a Plug-In Hybrid Powertrain!
Get ready for the ultimate camping experience! Volkswagen's commercial vehicles arm has officially confirmed that the next-generation California camper, based on the Multivan, will be available with a plug-in hybrid powertrain starting next year. But that's not all - they've also revealed a sneak peek with a pair of design sketches that showcase some exciting features.

One of the standout features of the new California camper is its pop-out roof and gazebo. Imagine sleeping under the stars or enjoying a shaded outdoor space at your campsite - all with the push of a button. Plus, Volkswagen has listened to customer feedback and announced that the new California will have not one, but two sliding doors. No more hassle when dropping off passengers or unloading your gear from the wrong side of the vehicle.

Inside, the California Concept boasts a removable tablet that gives passengers control over the climate and lighting, as well as a cool 'camping mode' setting. This mode deactivates the exterior lights, ensuring that you won't disturb fellow campers when accessing the van late at night.

When it comes to the interior, expect the new California to offer the same conveniences as the T6.1 model. You'll find a fully equipped kitchen area with stovetops and a cool box, a dining table for gathering with family and friends, and a sink for your convenience.

As for performance, the new California is expected to utilize the same plug-in hybrid powertrain found in the Multivan. This combination of a 148bhp 1.4-litre petrol engine and a 114bhp electric motor will deliver a combined 215bhp. In the Multivan, this powertrain has an official fuel economy rating of 156.9mpg, though real-world tests yielded around 55mpg with a fully charged battery. The weight of the new California may slightly impact its fuel efficiency, but it's still expected to be impressive.

Production of the next-generation California will begin next year at Volkswagen's Hanover plant in Germany. While exact pricing details haven't been announced yet, expect the new California to come at a premium compared to the T6.1 model. To give you an idea, the Mercedes-Benz V-Class Marco Polo starts at £83,490, and the Ford Transit Nugget is priced from £76,027.

And for those eagerly awaiting an all-electric version, there's good news. VW Commercial Vehicles CEO Carsten Intra has confirmed that an all-electric California based on the ID Buzz will be arriving in 2025. So stay tuned for even more exciting developments!
