Express Vehicle Contracts look at Volkswagens Scirocco primed for comeback as EV sports coupe
Volkswagen is considering bringing back the Scirocco coupe as an electric sports car, featuring a design inspired by the 1970s and possibly including a high-performance dual-motor, four-wheel-drive R model.
This potential new Scirocco would be part of a broader project that also includes the new Porsche Boxster/Cayman, the production version of the Cupra Dark Rebel concept, and a new Audi TT.
If approved, the Scirocco could launch by 2028. It is planned to be positioned above the second-generation ID.3, which will adopt the Golf name and appear alongside a revamped version of the traditional Golf in 2027.
The new Scirocco would likely use a modified version of the PPE platform developed for the new Boxster/Cayman, which is exclusively electric.
This platform supports various wheelbase lengths, track widths, and both single-motor rear-wheel-drive and dual-motor four-wheel-drive configurations. Its design allows for low door sills and floor height, with the battery packaged in the center tunnel and behind the cabin, similar to the previous mid-engined Boxsters.
The new platform, known as E-Core by Porsche, was previewed by the 2021 Mission R concept car and is noted for its stiffness and rigidity, making it attractive for both coupe and convertible models like the future electric TT.
The Scirocco is anticipated to start with around 300bhp in a single-motor setup and exceed 400bhp in a dual-motor configuration. This would make it a successor to the Scirocco R, which was available from 2009 to 2017.
Design proposals for the new Scirocco began early last year under the direction of Andreas Mindt, who draws inspiration from the original 1974 Scirocco by Giorgetto Giugiaro. The aim is to create a sharp, low-profile design that enhances the car's sporty appearance.
Plans for the new Scirocco are part of Volkswagen Group chairman Oliver Blume's initiative to improve economies of scale through brand integration, component sharing, and cooperative production.
The production location for the new Scirocco is still undecided, but one option is the former Karmann factory in Osnabrück, Germany, where the original Scirocco was made.
