EV Home Charging Tariffs Overview
The cost of operating your electric vehicle is dependent on your home electricity cost. Switching your electricity provider and charging at off-peak times can significantly reduce your costs.
A growing number of energy providers are offering home energy tariffs aimed at electric car drivers. Here is an overview of the available providers.
British Gas Electric Drivers 2022v2
The dual-rate EV tariff provides cheaper rates between 12 am and 5 am to charge your car while you sleep. Prices are fixed with no exit fees, other similar tariffs are available with prices guaranteed into 2023, but the off-peak rate is higher.
- Costs 6.3p/kWh between midnight and 5am*. There are regional variations in the day rate.
- You need a British Gas smart meter which can be fitted free of charge, online account management, and Direct Debit payments
- If you plan to move, you cannot take the tariff with you
- 100% renewable energy

Bulb EV Energy Plan
Around 80% of electric vehicles are compatible with the Bulb smartphone app, enabling remote energy use monitoring and charge scheduling. If your EV isn’t listed yet, you can still sign up and use your usual Bulb app to charge your car.

E.ON Next Drive
The tariff is smartphone app-controlled and offers cheaper charging between midnight and 4am. The app automatically schedules charging, so you don’t need to stay up and wait.

- You need one of four compatible home charge points and a compatible electric car
- You also need to move or have your electricity and gas supply with E.ON

EDF Energy GoElectric
EDF Energy GoElectric offers three EV tariffs. Two have differing off-peak hours to suit usage needs, while the third is a fixed rate tariff for EV drivers that don’t have a smart meter. Prices on all three tariffs are fixed until April 2024.
- GoElectric: a flat rate of 27.71/kWh
- GoElectric 35: 4.5p/kWh between midnight and 5am or 36.45p/kWh outside these times
- GoElectric 98: 18.85p/kWh between 9pm and 7am plus all weekend or 37.75p/kWh outside these times*
- You need a smart meter installed for the dual-rate tariffs
- 100% renewable energy

Octopus Go
A dual-rate tariff fixed for one year that offers discounted smart cable for electric cars without charge scheduling.
- Costs 7.5p/kWh between 00.30 and 4.30am or 34.42p/kWh outside these times*

- 100% renewable energy

Octopus Agile Octopus
The constantly variable tariff follows wholesale electricity prices in half-hour portions. It is an excellent tariff for those able to move the bulk of their usage to outside peak times.
- Rates vary, but Octopus maintains there are regular 2p/kWh opportunities
- Octopus alerts customers when the price drops below zero, and they can be paid to take excess energy from the grid
- Unit costs are capped at 35p/kWh

Ovo Drive
The fixed-rate tariff is only available to dual fuel customers. Ovo Drive Anytime is an add-on that offers a lower rate whenever you smart charge your EV. Smart charge costs 5p/kWh. If you need to use standard charging, your rate reverts to the amount below.
- Costs from 36.5p/kWh fixed for 12 months
- You need proof of electric vehicle ownership or leas
